How do astronomers measure the Sun's oscillations above and below the Milky Way's galactic plane?

The Sun oscillates over a 62 million years cycle, 230 light years north and 230 light years south of the galactic plane. If other stars also have various oscillations about the galactic plain, how do astronomers measure the Sun's oscillations? It seems to me there is no useful datum from which to measure.
